Quokka Sports pioneered digital interactive coverage of sailing with its online production of the 1997-1998 Whitbread Round the World Race. Quokka¡¦s coverage of that race reached more than 1.8 million unique visitors, tapping into new audiences and expanding the appeal of sailing as a world-wide spectator sport.
¡§The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world¡¦s greatest sailing contests and is special to Quokka Sports for many reasons. This is the event that put us on the map as we worked to change the way the world experiences sailing,¡¨ said Alan Ramadan, president and CEO of Quokka Sports. ¡§Now, we can draw on our past experiences as well as our passion for sport to produce the most immersive coverage of this prestigious race.¡¨
Quokka Sports will draw upon its experience in covering sailing to create its signature immersive coverage for the Volvo Ocean Race 2001-2002, known as the ¡¥Mount Everest of sailing¡¦. Every step of the way during the 32,250 nautical-mile race, Quokka Sports will capture emails, photos, and video from the athlete perspective, as well as provide up-to-the-minute telemetry and weather statistics at VolvoOceanRace.org. Quokka Sports will package this content in an attempt to deliver the richest, most complete experience available online for sailing and adventure enthusiasts.
In September 2001, sailing and sport fans around the world can watch as the Volvo Ocean Race competitors gather in Southampton, United Kingdom, before beginning the nine-month race that will circumnavigate the globe, stopping in nine countries on five continents.
¡§We are pleased to be working with Quokka Sports again. Quokka¡¦s unsurpassed sailing coverage connects sailors and their fans like never before,¡¨ commented Helge Alten, Chief Executive of The Volvo Ocean Race. ¡§Building on the success of the site for the last race, we hope to continue bringing the excitement of ocean racing back to the world via the words and views of the sailors themselves.¡¨
